Annual Industry Perspective

The Operational Integrity™ Observations are published annually to share emerging trends, recurring challenges, and practical insights from Digital GxP™ transformations across the life sciences industry. They are intended to encourage discussion and contribute to the continued evolution of Quality Management in modern regulated organizations.

Executive Summary

Throughout 2026, one trend became impossible to ignore.

Technology continued advancing faster than operational execution. Life sciences organizations invested heavily in Digital GxP™, Computer Software Assurance (CSA), cloud platforms, automation, and artificial intelligence. At the same time, many continued to experience recurring deviations, governance challenges, inconsistent execution, and operational friction long after implementation. These observations are based on years of supporting Quality Management Systems, Digital GxP™ initiatives, validation programs, and operational transformation across regulated organizations. Together, they reflect what I believe are some of the most important shifts shaping the future of Quality Management.

Observation 1

Implementation Success Does Not Guarantee Operational Success

Organizations have become increasingly effective at implementing regulated platforms. Maintaining those systems as the business evolves remains the greater challenge. Go-live is no longer the finish line. It is the point where Operational Integrity™ begins.

Observation 2

Operational Drift Remains One of the Least Recognized Risks

Operational problems rarely begin with a major failure. More often, they develop gradually through small decisions made over time. Processes evolve. Teams reorganize. Systems are enhanced. Integrations are added. Ownership changes. Temporary workarounds become permanent practices. Individually, these changes often seem insignificant. Collectively, they create measurable distance between documented procedures, configured systems, and day-to-day execution. That gradual separation is what I describe as Operational Drift.

Observation 3

Governance Is Becoming the Competitive Advantage

Technical implementation has matured considerably across the industry. The differentiator is increasingly governance. Organizations with clear ownership, disciplined decision-making, well-defined operating models, and active lifecycle management consistently outperform organizations using technically identical platforms. Technology provides capability. Governance determines whether that capability is sustained.

CSA Has Changed the Validation Conversation

Computer Software Assurance has shifted the industry's focus away from documentation volume and toward critical thinking, intended use, and risk-based decision making. The organizations realizing the greatest value are treating CSA as more than a validation methodology. They are using it as an operational philosophy that encourages smarter decisions throughout the system lifecycle.

Observation 5

Digital GxP™ Is Becoming the Operating Environment

Quality systems are no longer isolated compliance applications. They increasingly serve as enterprise platforms connecting Quality, Manufacturing, Regulatory Affairs, Clinical Operations, Engineering, suppliers, and executive leadership. As these platforms become more central to business operations, governance maturity becomes just as important as technical capability. Digital GxP™ continues to strengthen the partnership between Quality and Information Technology.

Observation 6

Artificial Intelligence Will Magnify Existing Operating Models

Artificial intelligence will not fix weak governance. It will accelerate whatever operating model already exists. Organizations with disciplined quality systems, strong governance, and consistent execution will realize disproportionate benefits. Organizations with fragmented ownership and operational inconsistency risk accelerating existing problems just as quickly. As AI becomes more integrated into regulated environments, Operational Integrity™ becomes even more important.

Quality Leadership Is Becoming Operational Leadership

The role of Quality continues to evolve. Today's quality leaders are helping shape technology strategy, digital transformation, operational excellence, inspection readiness, organizational change, and enterprise governance. Compliance remains essential. But the future of quality leadership is increasingly operational.

Operational Integrity™ Is Emerging as the Missing Discipline

Implementation. Validation. Inspection readiness. Compliance. Each remains essential. But sustaining alignment between people, processes, technology, governance, data, and execution over time may become the defining challenge of the next decade. That challenge is what I describe as Operational Integrity™.

Looking Ahead to 2027

I believe the industry's focus will continue shifting from periodic compliance activities toward continuous operational governance. The organizations that succeed will not simply implement better technology. They will build operating models capable of sustaining Operational Integrity™ while adapting to new technologies, evolving regulations, organizational growth, and increasing business complexity. They will not simply remain compliant. They will execute better.
